Byrdir House occupies one of the most convenient positions in Harlech for visitors who want to be within walking distance of the town's main attractions. Harlech Castle — the UNESCO World Heritage fortress — is a five-minute stroll through the old town streets, and the first tee of Royal St David's Golf Course, one of the top 50 links courses in Britain, is less than ten minutes on foot. The beach, reached through the dunes, is a pleasant fifteen-minute walk downhill.

The house itself has the character of a Victorian sea captain's residence — it was built around 1890 as exactly that — combined with the practical amenities a modern visitor needs. With nine rooms, a licensed bar, and off-road parking for up to ten cars, it suits both couples looking for a relaxed base and small groups who want the convenience of staying together. The bar is useful after a day on the course or the hills, when a walk back to the pub feels like too much effort.

Harlech is also a well-placed base for exploring this part of North Wales. Portmeirion, the extraordinary Italianate village made famous by cult TV series The Prisoner, is a twenty-minute drive north. Porthmadog and the Ffestiniog Railway are nine miles away; Barmouth, with its great beach and Victorian bridge, is eleven miles south along the Cardigan Bay coast road. Walkers have immediate access to the Rhinog mountains to the east — wild, trackless terrain that rewards those who make the effort.
