A
restaurant with rooms in a building dating from 1585.
A very comfortable, family run Restaurant with Rooms, dating from the 16th
century it is two of the oldest houses in Harlech, close to the ancient
castle. In the main building we have three twin/super king en-suite
which offer the same high standard and facilities of our annex rooms. In
the Llew Coch annex (a former coaching Inn in the C17) we have four
luxury twin/super king en-suite bedrooms. We are rated 4 Star Restaurant
with Rooms by the Wales Tourist board and 5 Diamonds with the RAC and
AA. We also hold a Silver Award from the True Taste of Wales.
New
Annex
We have purchased an
adjoining building, a Grade 2 listed 16th Century former inn known as
The Red Lion. The exterior of the building has been re-pointed using
lime mortar, and has been re-roofed using reclaimed Welsh slates in a
random style with 'lace valleys' (no lead is used, only overlapping
slates) and is unique in the town of Harlech. In the rear courtyard we
have uncovered the original cobblestones, and the front courtyard will
be reset with reclaimed cobblestones of Welsh granite.
In the interior the entrance hall will be laid with Welsh slate
flagstones. In the bedrooms all the exposed beams have been rubbed down
and will be left in their natural state, the plastering of the walls
will follow the original contours of the building - wobbly in places,
but it is 400 years old!. Decor-wise we will be using natural cream
colourings on the walls & ceilings, colour for each room will come in
the fabrics used on the custom-made headboards, bespoke curtains and
throws for the beds. As a contrast to the age and character of the
building we are fitting it out with contemporary solid oak furniture,
modern brushed steel light fittings, colour TV's with video & DVD,
leather seating and state of the art en-suite bathrooms - 'tapless'
baths, under-floor heating etc.
All of the rooms will have two 3 foot single beds which can be linked to
become a super king size bed. Two of the bedrooms will be suitable as
family rooms as they will have leather 2 seater sofa beds and the
en-suite facilities will have a bath and separate shower. One of the
ground floor rooms will be suitable for guests who are not fully mobile
as it is all on the level and has a 'walk in' shower (no screen or ledge
to step on to, and a window seat in the wet area) as well as a bath in
the bathroom.
Due to the increase in
allergies we do not have any feather pillows or allow any pets in the
building. All bedrooms are strictly no smoking, you may smoke in the
bar/lounge. If you would like dinner for your first night, please reserve
a table before arrival.
We have central heating
throughout and oak-beamed bar, with its open log fire provides a
comfortable and congenial place to relax. There is also a cosy residents
lounge with a view of Mount Snowdon.
Our personal involvement
ensures a warm welcome which is the hallmark of our family run
establishment. We are open all year except for three weeks in January when
we have a well deserved holiday with our two daughters, Megan & Georgia.
The restaurant at Castle
Cottage has steadily built up a reputation for good food, both locally &
with visitors to the area. We are recommended in The Which? good food &
hotel guides, AA best restaurants, RAC and Foders and other leading
guides. Glyn won Mid Wales chef of the year in 1997 & we have won Best
Restaurant with Rooms 2002 with the Which? hotel guide.
The dining room seats 45 and we have a cosy bar for pre & after dinner
drinks. We have an extensive wine list at modest prices.
We are just off the High Street, close to all local amenities. We do not
have our own car park, but there is an unrestricted car parking area
nearby plus a public car park within 50 metres.
Harlech is a pleasant two and a half hours drive from Liverpool,
Birmingham or Manchester, while London is a four and a half hour drive. If
you decide to take the beautiful Cambrian Coast line from Shrewsbury we
can collect you from the station.
