The Old Tannery takes its name from its location at the end of a quiet gated track near Talsarnau, a village between Harlech and Portmeirion on the Cardigan Bay coast. The non-smoking house has a garden that gives directly onto walking country, with the Wales Coast Path passing through the area and the Taith Ardudwy Way — a waymarked route through the historic landscape of southern Snowdonia — accessible from the door without needing to drive to a trailhead.

Talsarnau station is a short walk away, on the Cambrian Coast railway line between Pwllheli and Machynlleth. The station pick-up service means visitors arriving by train can be collected rather than having to navigate the village with luggage — a practical detail that makes the property genuinely accessible without a car. Day trips by train to Harlech (five minutes south) or Porthmadog (ten minutes north, for the Ffestiniog Railway) are straightforward and avoid the parking difficulties that can affect the area in summer.

The surrounding landscape is varied and rewarding for walkers. The Dwyryd Estuary is nearby, with wading birds and occasional ospreys visible from the coastal path. The Rhinog mountains, accessed from Harlech or via the lanes east of the coast road, offer more demanding terrain for experienced hill walkers. Portmeirion — Sir Clough Williams-Ellis's Italianate village on the Dwyryd peninsula — is six miles north and a highly recommended half-day visit from any base in this part of Gwynedd.
